one design, “The Sounders”

As one of the Midwest’s most cuddly traditions, quilts have a special place in our hearts. Sioux City Art Center has decided to shake things up with a new art project – featuring art inspired by traditional quilt designs! City Art Quilts combines the quilting tradition of our area with a contemporary means of art, creating a new and very interesting project. Local artists were very creative with their designs, which can be viewed here.

Those of us here at the Chamber are particularly excited about it! It’s great to see new kinds of artwork decorating the city, and especially when local artists are contributing. The Siouxland Chamber of Commerce is proud to boast its own underwritten quilt, pictured here.

(Isn’t it pretty?)

Be on the lookout for these works of art as they go up on display all over Sioux City this summer.

What does a hair cut and hot wings have in common you might ask? Well you’ll soon find out that you can get both and help a local charity at the same time. One thing I’ve noticed about the Siouxland business community is that both businesses large and small do what they can to help out those in need. On Sunday May 23rd, two chamber members, Buffalo Wild Wings and Great Clips are teaming up to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

“We are here in Sioux City to help out in the community any way we can, by volunteering our time and teaming up  with Buffalo Wild Wings, we are extremely excited about Sunday May 23, 2010 event, and giving back.” said Cindy Root, General Manager for the Sioux City Great Clips store.

Sunday, May 23rd
4-8 p.m.

Great Clips (Sunnybrook)
$5 Hair Cuts
Face painting by Colors’ the Clown
Balloons
Buy a raffle ticket for a chance to win great prizes!
All proceeds benefit a local charity granting wishes for Children.

Buffalo Wild Wings (Lakeport Commons)
Mention the partnership with Great Clips and 10% of your total bill will go toward helping others.

Ms. Root also added that “For all of us at Great Clips there is just that little bit of magic we humbly hope will help make a child’s wish a reality.”

Who knew that our Chamber Ambassadors aka Green Coats could sing and dance for Sioux City. In this RAGBRAI video these dedicated chamber volunteers rocked out along with other community members to help promote the annual bike ride across Iowa. This video is a great testament to the community and shows that Sioux City is full of  fun (and funny) people!

Two very exciting things are mentioned in this week’s Positively Siouxland. The first mentions a few details about this year’s Saturday In The Park and gives a big thank you to those who make it bigger and better every year.

The next clip announces that Forbes Magazine ranked the Siouxland area as #14 on the list of top places for businesses and careers relative to our size. Not only was Siouxland named, but other Midwest cities were given the honors as well.

Lindsay Washburn and Chelsey Meyer say "goodbye" to the Chamber and "hello" to the working world as they end their internship.

Well, our time is up here at the Chamber and it is a bittersweet good-bye. Lindsay and I have had so much fun interning at the Chamber and have not only learned about social media but also more about Siouxland and community members. It has been a great experience that neither of us will ever forget!

Chelsey- “I would like to say thanks to everyone who read our blogs and “liked” them on Facebook or left a comment. It really meant a lot to me! I’d also like to thank everyone at the Chamber that helped make this experience such a great one for me. I honestly don’t know what I would have done without Chris’s expertise in thank-you notes, Beth’s camera recording abilities, Nicole’s help unjamming the printer, Joseph’s push to be an entrepreneur all the time, Barbara and Teresa’s hilarious comments throughout the day, and Debi’s stylish outfits to try to imitate. And don’t forget, Mary’s smiling face when I arrive every day and Dianne’s hard work fixing my computer when it’s slow. Not only was it great to work with amazing people every day but I also had a great time interviewing and writing about the local business community members.
Well, as for future plans, after graduation on May 8th, I will be driving down to Texas to live and work! It’s a big step but I’m definitely ready for sunny days and “a whole other country” atmosphere. I haven’t quite landed a job yet, but I’m hoping to get one with a public relations firm. I’ll keep my fingers crossed! But thanks again to our social media friends and God bless!”

Lindsay- “This semester has gone by so fast! I have learned so much during my time here at the Chamber, and met a lot of wonderful and interesting people. Thank you to everyone for reading our blogs and interacting with us on Facebook and Twitter. I know you will give the next interns a wonderful welcome as well. I am very much looking forward to graduation and am excited for the future. As some of you may know, I recently got engaged to the wonderful and amazing Jeremy McClure of the Sioux City Police Department, so I will be very busy planning and preparing for our coming wedding. I am excited to get back into acting both locally and, hopefully, regionally. I also plan on writing, writing, writing as much as I can. Next year I am planning on furthering my education in graduate school. I am very tied to Sioux City. My roots are deep here, so I will be around, at least for the near future. Thanks again to everyone here at the Chamber, its members, and the Siouxland community.”
