Lieutenant Governor Patty Judge was in Siouxland today speaking about the Lieutenant Governors’ Challenge for a healthier Iowa. The challenge is part of the public health campaign “Your Heart is in you Hands” and will take place from June 15-September 6. The 12 week program allows participants to set and track both fitness and health goals for themselves.
The programs website provides a list of activities and foods that have a point value associated with them. Any participant that racks up 140 points or more receives a medal. Before ending her speech at St. Luke’s this afternoon the lieutenant governor challenged Siouxland to have over 1,000 participants sign-up within 24 hours. She gave the same task to those in Council Bluffs this morning.

This afternoon I took the Sioux City Design Works visual survey to “help ensure the future vision of the community is reflected in the physical shape and character of the built environment.” Sioux City Design Works put together a survey that allows those taking to view and rate a set of images. The survey took me about 10 minutes to complete and was pretty fun. The images focused on design elements such as parking, signs, public space, etc. I even got to list my two favorite places in Sioux City at the end.
Check out the survey and have your opinions heard on future development and redevelopment in Sioux City. A series of town hall meetings will be held June 22-25. Visit www.siouxcitydesignworks.com for more information on this project.

The Professional Developers of Iowa Spring 2009 Conference is being held in Sioux City May 27-29. This afternoon I had the opportunity to get some questions answered by Kenneith Kirkland, PhD, Iowa State University Research Foundation, Inc. about technology transfer and its uses.
Q: What is technology transfer?
Kirkland: Technology transfer is the process of getting inventions to companies so that they can develop them into products.
Q: What is the link between economic growth and technology transfer:
Kirkland: Technology transfer provides opportunity for economic development in the state of Iowa. We have $84 million worth of products in Iowa from licensing provided by this process.
Q: How have you been working with the Siouxland Initiative?
Kirkland: They have been very helpful for ISU. Joseph has been helping us make contacts in Iowa and in getting people interested in licensing.
Kirkland and Joseph Wright, JD, Siouxland Initiative will be presenting on Technology Transfer from a University later this afternoon at the PDI Conference.
