Today’s marketing tip is from Susan Gunelius, and the full article can be found at http://tinyurl.com/nymnwc

Here are five tips that remind you to know your audience:

  1. Customers want to know what’s in it for them, so tell them what you have to offer.
  2. You can’t use the same copy everywhere. Remember that people reading a billboard have just seconds to get your message, while those that pick up your brochure are going to expect much more information.
  3. You can’t use the same copy for every audience. Adjust your message for your audience. Are you addressing new or existing customers? Younger or older customers? Your message may be different depending on the demographic.
  4. Your tone and language should match your audience. Save jargon for business to business communication.
  5. Be creative and willing to go outside what you learned in English class when writing copy for your marketing pieces.

Are you the Next Chamber Intern?

Do you have what it takes to be the next Siouxland Chamber Intern? Exactly one month from today I’ll be back in Ames to finish my senior year at Iowa State. Which means the Chamber is currently taking applications for a social media intern.

As a social media intern you would be responsible for keeping Siouxland in the know through blog posts, Tweets, Facebook, YouTube videos, Flickr photos, and Utterli audio posts. Sound Greek to you? Don’t worry, Chamber Director of Investor Relations, Beth Trejo, has a wealth of knowledge in the area, and has gained national recognition for the social media program she started at the Siouxland Chamber, which means a great opportunity for you to get experience in a field that will be growing for years to come.

While there’s no coffee fetching here, you can find a cup at weekly networking events where you’ll meet local business leaders, media, and other young professionals. During my time as an intern so far I’ve had the opportunity to publish dozens of articles, interview philanthropist Dan Cook when he rowed through Sioux City, attend the Tourism Day Luncheon, and build a portfolio of works that will be invaluable when I start my search for a job after graduation in May. I’d encourage students in mass communication, journalism, business, marketing related fields to apply.

Please send your resume and cover letter to:

489121_elliptical_trainersLast week’s business roundtable focused on ways to save on health care by promoting a corporate health and wellness program in your business. Another side benefit…healthier employers and employees.

Here are some tips discussed at the roundtable for cutting costs and becoming healthier:

  1. Avoid the emergency room with services such as the my nurse program. This allows employees to get advice on when they actually should go see the doctor, and when its best to let a cold run its course.
  2. Make sure management buys into the health and wellness program.1097383_fruit_salad Set the example and encourage those around you to participate in a healthy lifestyle through your actions.
  3. Drink 40 ounces + of water a day.
  4. Hold a monthly wellness challenge. Check out the Lt. Governor’s Heart Challenge here in Iowa for some ideas.
  5. Celebrate the successes of those who are leading a healthy lifestyle and working to cut health care costs.
  6. Provide healthy food at your meetings and events. Fruit, vegetables, granola bars, low fat cheeses, and bottled water are a few examples.
  7. Don’t think you have to do this all by yourself. Start an internal Wellness Planning Committee at your organization.
  8. Encourage employees to bike to work.
  9. Allow time for an exercise break during the work day.
  10. Check out free services offered locally. www.stlukes.org/knowyourrisk allows employees to receive an assessment of their heart health, as well as find out if they’re at risk for diabetes or lung disease.

1087588_cameraDon’t forget about the visuals! This week’s Marketing Monday tip is a reminder that a picture says a thousand words. Adding videos and images to your Web site, Facebook account, blog, etc. can increase your views and keep people coming back. Some of our most viewed posts at the Chamber include YouTube videos and photos from our events.

You don’t have to be a professional to add video or images, in fact you don’t even have to take them yourself. Most cameras have a video feature that allows you to record short clips, or link already existing YouTube videos to your site. If you’re not interested in taking your own photos check out creative commons sites such as Flickr. Photos on this site are free to use as long as you provide photo credits.
